AHEC – SUCCESSFUL IN INCREASING SHIPMENT IN INDIA FOR US HARDWOOD PRODUCTS

With the boom in the furniture manufacturing industry in India, the import of hardwood is also increasing in a great pace, thanks to AHEC. India has remarkably increased its import from US this year. During January to June 2008, Indian import of US hardwood logs, lumber and veneer has reached $2.4 million, which is a significant increase (86.0%) from the previous year. US hardwood log imports rose by 21.5% in value to $855,000 and by 62.0% in volume to 1,729m3. US hardwood import for veneer has risen for 77.8% at the value of $809,000. Again, the import of the hardwood lumber from US has grown by 401.3% in value to $782,000 and by 435.8% in volume to 1,109m3.
AHEC has been trying long to recover the Indian import of US hardwood products as the market has long been sluggish. However, the current account indicates at the upsurge in the trend of importing hardwood, logs, lumber and veneer from US. The boom in the wood, panel and furniture industry in India is the reason behind the increase in US import. The business in the second half of the year is anticipated to follow the same trend as the first half of the year.
